Yoga Class Description
At the Maruka School for Yoga we believe “there is no one way of yoga, there are countless ways, and the best way is to find your way.” With this credo, we build flexibility directly in our classes for each student to explore their inner expression. You wont find “freestyle” or “fusion”, and we prefer “Vinyasa” to “flow”. Our program is built on the Ashtanga (8 Limbs) of Yoga, and classes are coded for Gentle, Moderate and Vigorous. Whether a novice or experienced, all are welcome to discover the benefits of each discipline. Come seek a consultation with our Director to find the right path for you. For those new to yoga, valuable tips can be found at New to Yoga or Maruka? For class rates and schedule, see Rates and Passes and Daily Schedule.
Basic Yoga (All Levels) : For everybody, with a focus on proprioception, this class draws awareness to basic structural alignment, fostering curiosity and creativity with you choosing the best way to move in your own body. Some pranayama is incorporated too.
Hatha (G/M/V): Most corporal yogas are based in hatha, which can be translated to mean “forceful,” “sun and moon,” or “physical.” The emphasis is on maintaining each asana for a period of time to explore its various qualities, while learning about the specifics of anatomy and physiology.
Renewal (G/M/V): Renewal Yoga focuses on stretches, sun salutation movements and savasana, aiming to restore, renew, and energize.
Sivananda (M/V): This traditional Hatha yoga is based on five principles to improve physical and mental health, and spiritual growth: proper breathing, exercise, nutrition, relaxation, and meditation.
Vinyasa (M/V): “Progressive movement” is one way to describe a vinyasa experience – commonly referred to as “flow”. A derivative of the SuryaNamaskar (sun salutation), the atten-tion is on steady, deliberate momentum while entering, maintaining, and exiting many asanas.
Yoga-lates (M/V): Yoga meets pilates in this engaging workout with a special concentration on the abdomen core. Experience a powerful exercise routine where the practice of pilates is complimented by a creative mix of yoga postures and stretches.
